Morton’s Rolls lovers will be able to get their hands back on the breakfast staple starting this morning.

The iconic Glasgow bakery was saved from closure at the end of last week by the consortium PVL who took over ownership after a surprise halt in production earlier this month.

PVL representative, John McIlvogue said: None of us wanted the past couple of weeks to unfold in the way that they have, but it has been entirely out with our control.

“The important thing now is that Morton’s is back in action, we’ve got the workforce back on the production line, and we’re ready to start producing our famous rolls that the good people of Glasgow have been crying out for.”

Production has started up again at the company’s Drumchapel factory and around half of the workforce have been brought back with immediate effect, with plans for increased numbers of staff to return soon.

"There's light at the end of the tunnel"

However, some shops and cafés who relied on the famous crispy and well-fired rolls are unsure when deliveries will resume.

Ibrox based café, Good Times Roll has been struggling to find replacements in local supermarkets to keep the business running.

Owner, Steven Eddie, said: “the only indication that I have received that orders are going to be sent out again, and production resumed, is purely from the news and what I’ve read in reports.

“Not one single current member of staff for Morton’s Rolls have been in contact, so we’ve been completely left in the dark.”

We reached out to Morton’s Rolls for comment, but no one was available at the time.

Duke Street’s Mesa café haven’t faced the same issues. Owner Andrea Bartolini said: “the driver I deal with got in touch, probably the middle of this week, saying production was restarting this weekend so deliveries were going to be made from Monday.”

People across the city will be delighted to see the rolls return, and as Mr McIlvogue put it: “Glasgow doesn’t need to worry about having nae rolls anymore; Morton’s is back.”
