More riverside flats planned

Thousands of homes, a mix of leisure venues and a hotel could be built at Yorkhill Quay under new plans.

Peel L&P has launched an online consultation to gather the public’s views on the proposed scheme.

If progressed, the project would include 1100 homes, with open market, build to rent and co-living properties on the northern banks of the River Clyde, between the Riverside Museum and the SEC.

The hotel would have 200 bedrooms and there would be 2500 sqm of leisure venues.

Back in January, Peel L&P secured approval for a new Clydeside retail outlet – the Glasgow Harbour Lifestyle Outlet.

It will be developed on land bordered by the River Clyde and the River Kelvin and will include shops, restaurants and a cinema.

They run similar retail parks in Manchester, known as the Lowry Outlets, and at Gloucester Quays.

The developer says the latest plans would “help repopulate and reactivate the waterfront, creating a vibrant and diverse destination which complements and connects with surrounding uses” – including the museum, Clydeside Distillery and SWG3.

Brian Lavalette, Peel’s property director for Scotland, said: “We’re fully committed to the Clyde Mission and have been working closely with the Scottish Government and local council on our plans for the Glasgow Waters area, which includes Yorkhill Quay and Castlebank Quay.

“Our vision is to create a sustainable environment for local people to enjoy. We will actively seek opportunities to supply our developments with low carbon, locally-generated energy and to use energy in a responsible way where possible.

“We welcome thoughts from the local community on our plans for Yorkhill Quay.”

The developer believes the scheme would help to “reconnect the riverfront” when the new Govan to Partick bridge is in place, providing links to the SEC, River Kelvin walkways, Partick and Finnieston.

They are planning a series of ‘River Rooms’, large areas of public realm along the riverside.

A planning application, for permission in principle, is expected to be submitted in early 2021.

Public consultation runs until November 30, with comments accepted via email – to advice@mcinally-associates.co.uk – until December 4.
