Police say the way the public responded to reports of a missing autistic boy in Kirkintilloch last night was outstanding.

The message was shared on social media hundreds of times and people took to the streets to help trace 9 year old Darren Gamble, who was later found.

Darren was with his father at Waverley Skate Park in Kirkinilloch, East Dunbartonshire, at around 6.30pm on Tuesday when he made off on his white BMX bike.

Police said they were making their way back to a car when Darren cycled off.

A large-scale search was launched and officers appealed for any sightings on Darren, who is unable to speak.

Police Scotland said he was found on Tuesday night.

A force spokesman said: "He has been traced safe and well in Twechar. The public are thanked for their assistance."
