Two men are facing a lengthy stretch behind bars after stealing a £50,000 car while pretending to be CID officers.

David Gordon and Brian Murdoch donned stolen police uniforms, complete with handcuffs, radios, batons and overt body harnesses, to dupe the owner of the BMW X5 in to thinking they were cops.

They pretended they were helping him retrieve his mobile phone, which he'd left in a taxi in Glasgow, in May this year.

And when he went in to his home to get the paperwork they'd asked to see to prove the phone was his, they drove off in the car.

The car had been advertised for sale on Gumtree and 21-year-old Gordon and 22-year-old Murdoch stole it during a spree which saw them steal three vehicles advertised for sale on the website.

Gordon stole the first vehicle, a silver Ford Focus, in March this year in Glasgow, and he and Murdoch then stole a BMW 116i turbo from a couple in Paisley at knife point in April this year.

The Paisley theft saw Gordon answer the Gumtree ad, take the car for a test drive with the owner present and then agree to buy the vehicle if they drove him to a bank to get the deposit.

But when they left the vehicle to get the cash, Murdoch swooped in a pulled a knife on them, demanding the keys, before he and Gordon jumped in to the vehicle and fled.

They admitted their guilt over the thefts and have been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing.
