A man from Uddingston's popped the question to his girlfriend in the middle of an empty SSE Hydro - three years after they came to the venue on their first date.

24-year-old Jamie McGuire got down on one knee after duping his girlfriend Nicole Short into believing they'd won tickets and a backstage tour.

Once the couple arrived in the bowl of the arena, 'Yours' by Ella Henderson began to play as "Nicole, will you marry me?" appeared on the LEDs screens.

Through tears, the bride-to-be managed a "yes".

Jamie, who works in Afghanistan as a military contractor, had spent months arranging the special proposal.

He told Clyde News: "It was coming up to my leave and I'd planned to do it when I was home from work, and I'd looked into a lot of different venues. But then I emailed the Hydro because this was where we had our first date in 2014.

"They got back to me and they were really enthusiastic, and it snowballed from there. It went so easy I thought Nicole was going to say no!"

"All day today I've been stressed out my box and Nicole's been like, "what's your problem?" Obviously it was a decoy coming here to pick up tickets that I said we'd won to actually get us in here. We went to the Crowne Plaza and I had to sink a glass of wine to calm the nerves."

Nicole admitted she had no idea what was in store.

She said: "I didn't suspect a thing. I was annoyed at him because I was asking why did I need to be so done-up to get a tour of the Hydro? So I never suspected a thing and I'm really surprised he's managed to keep it from me!

"He can't keep anything from me, he's really bad with surprises. He's done amazing. I literally didn't realise what was happening until he got down on one knee."
