A Highlands man is being called a "hero" after climbing to the top of a lamppost to rescue a seagull which had gotten stuck.

Jack Kelly, 21, from Fort William was out with colleagues in Glasgow to watch the final of the Euros, and later ended up on Sauchiehall Street.

A friend alerted the pizza chef to the bird which had gotten entangled in a lamppost.

After freeing the gull, he slid back down the pole to safety and was met by cheers and applause by onlookers.

Determined to save the seagull, Jack was filmed scaling and has since had hundreds of comments calling him a "hero".

In the comments of the video, one said: "Legend."

Another said: "Phenomenal - the world needs more guys like him. Glasgow and the gulls got it lucky."

'Don't try this at home'

Jack told Clyde 1 News: "It was mental.

"I remember just having a very poised and determined look and thinking 'I am going to save this seagull.'

"I darted across the road and originally I thought it'd have good grip on it, but I decided to try and take my shoes of socks off at first - but it didn't work because it was warm outside and it was a bit sweaty.

"So I put my shoes and socks back on - and got up there. There wasn't much going through my head other than determination to save the bird.

"It was really tiring, but I managed to get it free, and everyone was clapping - I was bought some drinks too."

But Jack added not to try this at home - he said: "In hindsight, it was a very silly thing to attempt!"
