A man has admitted trying to murder a man he had only met for the first time that day in Hamilton.

Graeme Robertson stabbed and battered Robert Cochran at the victim’s flat in April.

Mr Cochran suffered bleeding on the brain and skulls fractures following the attack.

When police turned up, a blood-soaked Robertson initially refused to let them in.

But, the 30 year-old then stated: "Aye, this is just from an incident that happened earlier. I am fine."

Officers discovered a stricken Mr Cochran lying in the kitchen with a knife nearby.

Robertson went on: "He took a swing at me, so I took a swing at him."

After later being charged with the attack, he replied: "It's s***e."

On Monday Robertson pleaded guilty to attempted murder at the High Court in Glasgow.

Jennifer Bain, defending, said: "He went out for a walk that day and met Robert Cochran, who was previously unknown to him.

"He agreed to return to his flat with him."

Miss Bain said Robertson - previously jailed for violent crimes - had "no recollection" of the attack.

Lord Mulholland remanded him in custody as sentencing was adjourned until September 25 for reports.
