A man has died in a two-vehicle road crash.

The 30-year-old was driving south in a Volkswagen Golf on the A737 in North Ayrshire when it was in collision with a northbound Volkswagen Polo at around 4.35pm yesterday.

The driver of the Golf died at the scene.

A 48-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Polo was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in Paisley where she is in a serious but stable condition.

The 25-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Polo was also taken to the RAH where he was treated for minor injuries and later released.

Police appealed for information about the crash, which happened near the Manrahead roundabout in Beith.

Sergeant Kevin Blackley said: The A737 where the crash happened was extremely busy at the time of the incident last night.

I would urge any witnesses to the crash who have not yet spoken to officers to come forward as a matter of urgency as they may have information that is vital to our investigation.''
