A man killed his mother after struggling to cope with the death of his two children.

James Standing, 35, pled guilty to culpable homicide at the High Court in Glasgow.

The Dumfries man stabbed Beverley Bliss to death at her rural cottage just days before Christmas last year.

He then turned on his mum's partner, Gavin Robertson, who managed to escape after fleeing the house in only his boxer shorts.

Police later turned up at the scene and discovered Beverley with a knife still in her neck.

Standing faced a murder charge but prosecutors accepted his guilty plea to the reduced charge of culpable homicide on the basis of diminished responsibility.

A judge heard he had been suffering from an "abnormality of the mind" at the time of the attack.

Standing's son Beck had been found dead at just five weeks old in February 2015.

His partner then delivered a stillborn baby at 14 weeks on December 6 last year, and ended her relationship with Standing the next day.

He was said to be suffering from "bereavement issues" and being "increasingly withdrawn".

In a later meeting with psychiatrists, Standing admitted feeling "hatred" towards his mum.

Lord Beckett today ordered Standing to remain at Carstairs on an interim compulsion order.

He will return to court in September.
