Convict jailed for 11 years after trying to kill friend over money
Ross Platt stabbed Thomas McBrearty in Johnstone in March 2023 leaving him with cuts to his liver and in need of a chest drain
A man with a "lengthy criminal past" who tried to kill a friend over money has been jailed for 11 years.
Ross Platt stabbed Thomas McBrearty at a property in Johnstone's High Street in March 2023.
Mr McBrearty had stepped in to break up an argument between Platt and Aileen McIntyre, who was also there that day.
There had been accusation of money having been stolen.
Platt punched Miss McIntyre before turning the blade on Mr McBrearty, who was left badly hurt.
The 48-year-old was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.
He appeared via video-link from prison.
Platt had earlier been convicted of attempted murder as well as assaulting Miss McIntyre to her injury.
Judge Kevin McCallum KC said Mr McBrearty suffered a laceration to his liver and left needing a chest drain, a blood transfusion as well as other medical treatment.
He added: "You must have stabbed him at least twice. This is a very serious offence.
"It is made all the more worse by your previous significant offending."
The hearing was told Platt had a lengthy criminal past including many offences of violence as well as a high court jail-term.
Judge McCallum: "You stand convicted of a very serious crime against a background of violent offending over many years."
Platt - who had been on bail at the time - will also be supervised for a further three years on his release.
