A knife attacker who brutally slashed a man at a Greenock nightclub has been locked up for five years.
Andrew Sutherland, 27, struck Christopher McAuley in the town's Word Up nightclub last December.
A judge heard how the 29 year-old victim was left scarred for life after needing treatment for a neck wound.
Sutherland – a former supermarket worker - was today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.
He had earlier admitted assaulting McAuley to his severe injury, permanent disfigurement and impairment as well to the danger of his life.
Lady Stacey told him there was “no excuse” to go out armed with a blade and using it.
The judge said the jail-term would have been six years, but for his guilty plea.
The court earlier heard how the pair had been known to each other.
Before the attack there had been “minor confrontations” between them on the club dancefloor.
Sutherland, of Greenock, later claimed he had been defending himself.
The court heard McAuley had refused to co-operate with police after the attack.
Thomas Ross, defending, today said Sutherland accepted he had “behaved badly” and realised there were “other ways” to deal with any issues that night.
