A vandal who slashed 20 car tyres during a crime spree while walking his dog has been jailed for more than a year.

Ian Smith, 32, was seen by locals as he punctured the tyres on two parked cars on Maxwell Drive, Garrowhill.

Police were called to the area and when he spotted the officers on nearby Garrowhill Drive he tried to throw his blade away.

He asked why he was being arrested and on being told it was for having the knife he said “Oh aye, I did I’m sorry”.

Police inquiries revealed Smith had in fact damaged 10 cars and caused over £2,000 worth of damage.

Smith pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to having a knife on May 12, and maliciously puncturing 20 tyres.

Sheriff John McCormick said there was “no alternative other than custody” and jailed him for 16 months reduced from 24 months.

The court heard Smith was seen vandalising two cars and the police were contacted and immediately made their way to the area.

Smith walked towards the police car and “attempted to throw the lock back knife under the vehicle”, but it was found.

Procurator fiscal depute Derek Buchanan said: “Police officers immediately arrested the accused for the lock back knife, he asked why he was under arrest and was told it was because he had a knife.

“He replied ‘oh aye, I did, I’m sorry’.

“Police officers made requests in the victim and established that the accused had punctured a total of 20 tyres on 10 vehicles parked nearby.

“The total repairs are estimated in excess of £2000.”

Defence lawyer Mel Wise said Smith had been drinking and decided to take the dog a walk, and “stupidly” took the item with him.

He said: “There wasn’t any pre-planning to commit these acts of vandalism.”

The court heard he was feeling “angry with the world” at the time.
