Man jailed for city centre attack that left victim with brain injury

A man who left a stranger with a brain injury after a street attack has been jailed. Sean Twigg, 29, got into a violent row with Liam Thomas at a bus stop in Union Street in Glasgow city centre last December 15.

The men - who were not known to each other - ended up fighting with one another.

Prosecutor Shanti Maguire today/yesterday told the High Court in Glasgow it is now known what started the incident.

An associate of Twigg's then smacked Mr Thomas with a glass bottle and he ended up motionless on the ground.

Twigg went on to repeatedly punch the stricken man.

As passers-by stepped in, the thug appeared to walk away.

But, Miss Maguire told the hearing: "He ran back...and then kicked Liam Thomas to the head while he was on the ground."

Twigg and his friends then walked off. Mr Thomas was meantime rushed to hospital suffering from significant injuries to his head and face.

He had three skull fractures, a bleed to the left side of his brain as well as bruising.

The victim told police he could not remember what happened.

Twigg was later identified after the attack was captured on CCTV.

However, it was February 2022 before he was held after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Twigg today/yesterday pled guilty to - acting with others unknown - in assaulting Mr Thomas to his severe injury and to the danger of his life.

Miss Maguire said Twigg already had 45 convictions and had been freed early from a previous jail-term at the time.

He had been locked up in June 2020 for threatening a shop worker in Glasgow with a knife.

Lord Doherty today/yesterday sentenced him to five years and four months for this latest crime.

However, this will only begin after he serves 250 days from the previous term he was released early from.
