Police have identified a man who is in critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Paisley in the early hours of Friday.

The victim was with another man who left before officers arrived at the scene in George Street, near Barr Place.

It is believed he lay or fell on to the road before he was struck by a black VW Golf at around 12.45am.

He was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital in the town, where his condition is described as critical.

Police have now identified the 34-year-old man after making a public appeal on Friday but are still trying to piece together what happened before he was hit by the car.

Sergeant Jon Mochan, of Greater Glasgow Road Policing Unit, said: "Our previous appeal mentioned injuries that may have been sustained prior to the collision, however, following an update from medical staff, it would appear that all injuries were sustained as a result of him being struck by the car.

"The response from the public this morning following our earlier appeal has been good, however, we still need to find out where the man had been prior to the incident and who he was with just so we can piece together his movements and confirm why he was on the road.

"The second man was wearing grey clothing, and left the scene before police arrived.''

He added: "If you were in George Street and saw the two men or have any dash cam footage from there, or know where the man had been earlier that night, then please get in touch.''

The injured man is white and was wearing a navy and white striped T-shirt, a black hooded top, navy jogging bottoms and white socks.
