A 45-year-old man has denied killing a Port Glasgow dad by attacking him in the street.

At the High Court in Glasgow John Aitken, of Greenock, pled not guilty to the culpable homicide of 63-year-old Thomas Craig on March 14, last year, at Dalrymple Street, Greenock at its junction with Laird Street.

It is alleged he followed Mr Craig, ran at him, repeatedly kicked him on the legs and punched him on the head causing him to fall and strike his head to the ground.

Mr Craig died shortly afterwards at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Aitken, who is represented by QC Ian Duguid, has lodged a special defence of self defence.

The court was told that the trial is expected to last five or six days.

Judge Lord Turnbull set the trial for July.
