Man critical after New Lanarkshire fire

A man's in a critical condition after a fire broke out after a fire and disturbance in New Lanarkshire last night.

Emergency services were called to a disused commercial property in Hall Street, New Stevenston, on Tuesday evening.

Police later received a report of a man who presented himself at Monklands Hospital in Airdrie suffering from burn injuries.

Officers have confirmed the incidents are linked and the man remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

The fire service attended the building with a number of appliances and used high-power hoses to extinguish the fire.

A thorough search of the area was undertaken by specialist urban search and rescue units to find any injured people, but no-one was found.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: Around 11.40pm on Tuesday July 4, police were called to a report of a disturbance and a fire at a disused property in Hall Street, New Stevenston.

Initial enquiries indicate that the fire may have been deliberately set.

Emergency services attended and the road was closed as a precaution due to the unsafe building.

Around 12.40am this morning, Wednesday July 5, police received a report of a man who presented himself at hospital suffering from burn injuries in Monklands District General Hospital.

He remains in hospital, where medical staff describe his condition as critical but stable.

Officers are continuing enquiries and can confirm that both incidents are linked. Hall Street remains closed until further notice and local diversions are in place.''
