Man Convicted Of Raping Sleeping Woman

A man who raped a sleeping woman after sneaking into bed beside her is behind bars.

Greg Moffat attacked the 23 year-old at a flat in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire then told her that he was sorry.

The lifeguard was later held by police, but denied having sex with the woman.

But, a jury has found the 22 year-old guilty of rape following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

A judge heard how the attack has changed the victim's life.

First offender Moffat was remanded in custody and wept as he was lead handcuffed to the cells.

He will learn his fate when he returns to the dock next month

The rape took place at a flat in Airdrie in the early hours of March 16 last year.

The victim was part of a group who gone back to the house following a night out at a local club.

She ended up going to sleep in a room there but was later awoken by Moffat raping her.

The woman told the jury: I said to him: "you were having sex with me when I was asleep. I said it over and over."

I was shocked. I didn't know what to think can't explain it. I just wanted to get away.

Moffat, also of Airdrie, later said sorry to the woman.

But, after being arrested, Moffat insisted he and the victim were involved in a consensual sex act rather than full intercourse.

However, giving evidence, the woman told the court she wanted her attacker to tell the truth.

She said: I don't know why he is just not admitting it. I cannot believe why he would say that. I don't know why this happened.

The jury was also told that the rape has left the woman shattered including forcing her to give up her job.

She added: My whole life has changed. I don't feel comfortable with people.

I am just different. I just don't have the same life that I did.

In her closing speech, prosecutor Shanti Maguire told the jury: The Crown case is that Greg Moffat was an opportunist. He took advantage of the situation.

Judge Lord Armstrong placed Moffat on the sex offenders list.
