Man charged after P&O Ferries demonstration at Cairnryan Port

Dozens of protesters gathered to block traffic for P&O’s Cairnryan to Larne ferry on Friday

A 61-year-old man has been charged with road traffic offences following a demonstration in Cairnryan yesterday.

Protesters blockaded the entrance to Cairnryan Port to highlight P&O Ferries' recent decision to sack hundreds of workers on Friday afternoon.

The company came under fire after firing staff without notice, with workers informed via a pre-recorded video.

It claimed that the business was no longer ‘viable’, and that without major changes, it would fold.

On Friday, blockades were put in place at Cairnryan Port and at Larne Port, with unions joining former P&O workers in protest against the company.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were made aware of a demonstration in Cairnryan at around 2pm on Friday, 29 April, 2022.

“During the protest a 61-year-old man was charged with road traffic offences.

“A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
