A 26 year old man has been arrested following the death of a man in Renfrew in January.

Paul Mathieson, 37, was found with serious head and neck injuries in Wilson Street, just after 1am on Sunday January 14.

He’d been on a night out and is seen on CCTV talking to a man who then punches him to the ground, striking him several more times before running off.

He was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but died in the early hours of Saturday January 20.

The arrested man has now been released pending further inquiries.

Police said that inquiries are continuing.

Detective Chief Inspector Martin Fergus, Major Investigation Teams, said:

“From our enquiries so far, we know that Mr Mathieson was the victim of a sustained and brutal attack by one man and that he died as a result of his injuries.

“Unfortunately, Mr Mathieson lay for some time before he is found by a member of the public who called the emergency services."
