A man has appeared in court charged with murdering one man and trying to kill another in a broad daylight knife attack in the block of flats where he stays.

William McCann is said to have stabbed James McFall to death in a close on Argyle Street, in Paisley on April 22.

Prosecutors claim 37 year-old McCann, killed 30 year-old McFall when he "did strike him on the body with a knife or similar instrument and did murder him."

McCann, who lives in a flat at 33 Argyle Street, is also said to have attacked 37 year-old Robert Seetul on the afternoon in question.

Prosecutors claim he did "repeatedly strike him on the body with a knife or similar instrument all to his severe injury and in an attempt to murder him"

Police were called to the property - in what they described as the "busy residential street" - at around 5.35pm on Saturday, April 22 this year.

They launched a murder inquiry after finding McFall dead and Seetul with serious injuries.

During the probe suspicion fell on McCann and he was arrested on Tuesday and held at Helen Street police station, in Glasgow's Govan area.

He appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court today from custody to face two charges - murder and attempted murder.

He was represented by defence solicitor Tom Williamson, of Paisley law firm McGeehan and Company, during the private hearing, where he made no plea or motion for bail.

Sheriff Susan Sinclair continued the case for prosecutors to investigate further and remanded McCann in custody.

He is expected to make a second court appearance in connection with the case next week.
