A thug brutally stabbed a man in the chest with a Rambo-style knife because he had bad mouthed him, a court was told today.

William Wilson told police that blood which covered the flat ,where the brutal unprovoked attack took place, was caused by him cutting his finger with a machete to test the sharpness.

At the High Court in Glasgow 24-year-old Wilson admitted stabbing Drew Murdoch to the danger of his life on September 1 at flat 3/2, 9 Morton Terrace, Greenock..

He was originally charged with attempting to murder Mr Murdoch, but prosecutor Eoghainn MacLean accepted his guilty plea to the reduced charge.

Wilson also pleaded guilty to attempting to defeat the ends of justice by falsely claiming to police that it was his blood in the flat.

Mr MacLean said: “The accused's girlfriend Kelly Ann McLeod texted her friend Scott Rooney and invited him to her flat for a drink. He brought his friend Mr Murdoch with him.

“They arrived at about 6.30pm The accused let them in and went into the bedroom.”

Ten minutes later Wilson came out the bedroom and said 'alright' to both men and went over to hug Mr Murdoch.

But, seconds later Wilson stabbed Mr Murdoch.

He was bleeding profusely, but managed to stagger out of the flat.

There was blood all over the living room and a trail of blood leading out into the street.

Mr Murdoch collapsed in the street and was helped by a nurse, members of a nearby bowling club, who brought towels to stem the bleeding, and an off-duty police officer.

He suffered a collapsed lung, a cut to his liver and lost approximately 4.5 litres of blood.

Mr MacLean said: “Had it not been for immediate medical intervention he would not have survived.”

When police arrived at the flat they could hear voices inside but no one opened the door and they smashed the door down.

Mr MacLean said “They found the accused in the bedroom and his girlfriend in the living room. Neither appeared injured, yet there was blood staining inside the flat, mostly in the living room.

“It was clear an effort had been made to clean the floors with a mop.

“Mr Wilson claimed he had no knowledge of how Drew Murdoch had been assaulted. He said he had bought a new machete a few days before and cut his finger when testing the sharpness of the blade, but had not cleaned up the blood.”

Forensic scientists who examined the Rambo knife found Mr Murdoch's DNA on blood staining on the blade and Wilson's on the handle.

The court heard that Wilson was recorded making a phone call from Low Moss Prison in Bishopbriggs in which he confessed to his girlfriend that he had stabbed Mr Murdoch.

He told her: “ I just felt he obviously badmouthed me. I'm no having someone bad mouthing me like that. I'll get oot and stab f*** oot him again.”

Judge Lady Scott deferred sentence on Wilson until next month for background reports.

Defence advocate Tony Lenehan will give his plea in mitigation then.
