A man shone a laser at a police car distracting a sergeant who was driving, a court heard yesterday.

30 year-old Kevin Ayre dazzled the officer behind the wheel when he pointed the high-powered green laser at the vehicle.

They summoned colleagues to help find where it was coming from and a male silhouette was seen at the 13th floor window of a high rise block in Knightswood.

When police went to the door Ayre admitted it was his laser but initially gave police the name Kriss Ayre with a false date of birth.

Yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court admitted culpably and recklessly, repeatedly pointing the laser pen at a moving police car causing the driver to become distracted and to the danger of the officers in the car, on March 6, last year.

He also admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving police false information when he was detained.

The court heard around 1.20am two sergeants were in a marked police car driving along Kirkton Avenue.

They drove towards a 23 storey block of flats on the street and as they did they noticed a bright green light on the dashboard.

Procurator fiscal depute Michelle Brannagan said: “The rear windscreen was a dazzling green colour.”

“The sergeant who was driving felt distracted and alarmed and immediately stopped the vehicle on the road.

“The officers could see that the green light was coming from a window on the 13th floor of block 55 Kirkton Avenue.”

They tried to find out the precise flat position where it was coming from but couldn’t see properly.

Colleagues came to help locate exactly where the light was coming from.

Miss Brannagan said that a short time later when they left, officers who were still at the area saw a male silhouette at the window of a flat on the 13th floor.

She said: “He was then observed producing an item emitting a bright green light which was aimed at the police vehicle as it passed. The male then moved away from the window.”

Around 1.40am police went to the flat where they found Ayre in the living room.

He admitted he was responsible and told officers his name was Kriss Ayre and was taken to the police office.

During interview he made full admissions.

Later that night he admitted to police he had given false details and was charged for that offence also.

Ayre is in custody and will be sentenced at a later date
