Anthony Lewis is accused of assault to severe injury over an incident at Haymarket on May 21.
A man aged 37 was taken to hospital with a head injury following an altercation on a platform at around 9.45pm. He has since been released.
Lewis, from Edinburgh, made no plea or declaration at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and was released on bail.
