Around 35 firefighters have been battling a blaze at an Airdrie primary school.

Crews were called to the scene at around 3.55pm today and found the roof of St Dominic's primary school on fire.

The blaze broke out after lessons had ended for the day.

All those inside the building were evacuated before fire crews arrived and there were no reports of any injuries.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said:

The incident commander has strategically positioned firefighters around the building and they are working to bring the flames under control using high pressure jets.''

He said the fire has affected the entire building and residents in nearby homes were evacuated by police as a precautionary measure because of smoke.
