The replacement of 2km of motorway barriers on the M8 in Glasgow has been completed three weeks ahead of schedule.

The programme of overnight work between Junction 21 and Junction 22, which began in late April, was scheduled to last eight weeks, however the project was completed in just five weeks.

The £350,000 M8 safety barrier improvement project is one of a number of such schemes scheduled by Scotland TranServ to deliver long-term benefits to commuters, freight traffic and tourists using one of Scotland’s busiest transport corridors.

Laura Gray, Scotland TranServ’s Deputy Planned Maintenance Manager, said:

“The hard work of our project team and favourable weather conditions over the last few weeks has allowed us to complete this programme ahead of schedule.

“Over the last year, we’ve replaced over 12 kilometres of barrier, delivering long-term benefits to commuters across the central belt.”

The barriers were coming towards the end of their useable life and required replacement.

The work was scheduled through from 8pm to 6am each evening, in order to keep disruption to a minimum for commuters, freight traffic and the community.

Andy Fraser, Scotland TranServ’s Operating Company Representative, added:

“The M8 is Scotland’s most important economic artery, with thriving communities, large employers and tourist attractions along the route.

“That is why this significant project was planned for overnight working, and scheduled at this time of year. It has been delivered with maximum efficiency and minimal disruption.

“Across South West Scotland, we’re working on behalf of Transport Scotland to prioritise such road maintenance issues and deliver a programme of improvements as quickly, efficiently and safely as we possibly can.”
