Philip Morrison, 40, from Londonderry, denies murdering Derek Sheerin at an area of waste ground at London Road, Glasgow, on September 25, 1994.
He is accused of struggling with Mr Sheerin, compressing his neck with a belt and his hands, murdering him and robbing him of a watch, tobacco and £20 in cash.
Morrison, who is represented by QC Derek Ogg, pled not guilty to the charge.
Judge Lady Rae set trial for March next year at the High Court in Glasgow.
