LISTEN: Out with the Street Pastors on Glasgow's Halloween weekend
Our reporter Shiona McCallum went out with the voluntary teams to see what happened.
Glasgow was voted the safest city in the UK at night time in a survey released last week by The Deltic Group, but how much of that is down to the Street Pastors who help people who are vulnerable because of too much to drink?
Our reporter Shiona McCallum went out with the voluntary teams over the Halloween and pay-day weekend to see what happened.
You can listen to some of what she witnessed here:
The Street Pastor’s main responsibilities are helping people who have drunk too much alcohol, taken drugs or are in trouble without their friends. They famously give women in high heels flip flops and on average they give away around 300 pairs every month.
On Saturday they had two street teams out, which consisted of ten Street Pastors. They speak to homeless people, get people into taxis and ensure glass bottles are binned.
They also had three of their volunteers in the Safe Zone which is in the Tron Church on Buchanan Street, so easily accessible from both sides of the city centre. They have first aiders and police stationed there to ensure people in Glasgow are safe. On Saturday it was used by 21 people and of those, seven required first aid and one was arrested.
