The Reverend Alan Sorensen from Wellpark Midkirk church in the town, who will be carrying out a service.

A commemoration has taken place at St Laurence's Church which had to be rebuilt after it was bombed by German troops over two nights.

Inverclyde Council Provost Robert Moran said: “75 years ago this week, our communities were devastated by German bombs.

“It must be hard for those who didn’t see it and for those who were born after it to imagine the scenes of devastation around the streets we use every day.

“It is important that we commemorate for the dead, for the survivors, for the generations who came afterwards.

"We should also remember that other communities including Port Glasgow and Gourock were affected by the devastation caused by German bombers."
