It's exactly one year since 25-year-old Lanarkshire primary school teacher Maryam Najafian died in a tragic sledging accident in Kelvingrove Park.

The popular young teacher has been described as a "shining light" and her family say she was dedicated to improving the lives of children.

Her brother Reza has been speaking to our reporter Lizzie Parker about how the family's been coping and the foundation her family had set up in her name:

The Maryam Najafian Foundation has raised thousands of pounds for local disadvantaged children through fundraisers like the Tough Mudder and various community events.

The family hope it will carry on Maryam's name and spirit.

Much of the money raised so far has been given to the GK Experience which helps young people in some of Glasgow's most deprived areas.

Reza said: "We're very fortunate in that we've got a really fantastic network of family and friends but nonetheless it's a really heartbreaking time of year.

"Out of something so tragic, we wanted something positive to come out of that. The way we did that was to set up the Maryam Najafian foundation.

"Maryam was a primary school teacher is some of the most deprived areas in Glasgow and what we wanted to do is help those most disadvantaged - especially children.

"It keeps her memory alive and does what she wanted to do and that's take care of children and make life just a little better for those who need it most."
