Councillors, business owners and charity leaders who've spent years demanding better lighting in Glasgow's parks are celebrating another huge victory for the Light The Way campaign.

The local authority met yesterday to set out spending plans for the year ahead and it's planning to invest £100,000 to install more lighting in Queens Park after a successful trial last winter.

Convener for Neighbourhood Services Laura Doherty told Clyde 1: "From this year's budget, we've allocated £500,000 to the feminist city fund.

"This will look at making our urban environment safer through a feminist lens - that will include things like park lighting.

"The feminist urbanism working group also nominally allocated £100,000 to the project in Queens Park and that fund will be able to develop the lighting."

Trials of lighting in Kelvingrove and Queens Park began last winter after the local authority agreed to speed up plans to improve visibility at the Light The Way meeting in 2023.

Old electric fixtures in Cranhill Park which hadn't been in operation for over a decade were also fixed last year.

Long time supporter of the Light The Way campaign Jill Brown told Clyde 1: "I'm absolutely delighted at this news.

"When you look back over the campaign and how successful it has been, it is clear to see the momentum is still going.

"It also just goes to show the power of parties working together because this is something that changes people's lives - it gets them back into our parks for far longer in the day."
