Life sentence for man who attacked hospital staff
One victim suffered a broken cheekbone.
A man has been given a life sentence for brutal attacks on three hospital staff.
Jamie McCulloch, 29, assaulted the staff as he was being taken back to his room at the State Hospital in April, last year.
One nurse suffered a fractured cheek.
Yesterday, at the High Court in Glasgow judge Lord Mulholland placed McCulloch on an Order for Lifelong Restriction and ordered him to serve a punishment part of three years.
Lord Mulholland made the order because of the high risk McCulloch poses to the public.
And, it will be up to the parole Board to determine when, if ever, McCulloch is released.
Lord Mulholland told McCulloch: “These were three appalling assaults.
"You assaulted three members of hospital staff who were treating you.
"You have show little or no genuine remorse.
"You are considered at a high risk of causing violence to others."
McCulloch – who has a long history of violence – is already serving a 10 year sentence for attempted murder.
He is currently at the State Hospital, but will be returned to a mainstream prison when his mental health condition improves.
The court heard that McCulloch initially attacked staff nurses Robert Donlon and Marlene Irvine.
Both were punched and kicked before nursing assistant Alan Graham tried to help his colleagues.
He was also struck before McCulloch was eventually forced to the ground and held.
Prosecutor Blair Speed said Mr Donlon ended up with a fractured cheekbone and continues to suffer pain.
Both he and Miss Irvine were diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Mr Donlon has returned to work, his colleague is on desk duties while Mr Graham has retired.
Solicitor advocate John Keenan said: “Mr McCulloch has mental health problems.
"There is an element of issues including personality disorders and auditory images.
"His history of previous offending is of a violent nature.
"A risk assessment report indicates he presents a high risk of offending.”
