British Transport Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward and help them trace the suspect.
The two women - aged 29 and 30 years – were the subject of the homophobic abuse as they travelled on a train between Glasgow and Stirling on Sunday, 1 May 2016.
The unsavoury incident took place on the 14.59 Queen Street to Alloa service shortly after it left Glasgow and prior to its arrival into Stirling station.
The couple were left extremely upset by the woman’s behaviour and contacted British Transport Police (BTP) by text.
The woman responsible is described as being aged between 40 and 50 years-old with blonde bobbed hair, glasses and wearing a pink and purple top.
She was travelling in the company of at least six other women on the train.
CCTV footage from on the train and at the stations is being reviewed to help identify the woman – who alighted from the service when it arrived at Alloa. Constable Nicky Ritchie, the BTP officer in charge of the enquiry, is appealing for information.
He said: “Hate crime in any form is totally unacceptable and there is absolutely no excuse for the sort of behaviour displayed by the woman.
