Leader of Ahmadi muslims on Asad Shah death
Abdul Abid tells us tells he doesn't expect any further attacks after the death of the popular Shawlands shopkeeper
Clyde News has been speaking to the head of the Ahmadi muslims in Scotland, President Abdul Abid, about the death of one of its members, shopkeeper Asad Shah.
Mr Shah was killed on Thursday night in Shawlands in an attack that was ‘religiously prejudice’ according to the Police.
It left people on the South side of Glasgow and beyond in mourning as many described the 40-year-old as a ‘pillar of the community’ with ‘a heart of gold’.
24 hours after he was killed, a silent vigil was attended by hundreds of people, including Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s only Muslim MSP Humza Yousaf and human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar.
Mr Shah was an Ahmadi Muslim. Their President Abdul Abid, who is based at the Baitur Rahman Mosque in Glasgow says its a reminder of the persecution their community faces but despite this he doesn’t expect more attacks here.
Yesterday 32 year old Tanveer Ahmed from Bradford appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court charged with Mr Shah’s murder, he made no plea or declaration.
