Four months of roadworks to tackle Largs ferry traffic jams

Traffic lights will be installed to control vehicles leaving Cumbrae ferry

Ayrshire motorists are being warned of four months of roadworks on the A78 through Largs town centre which will include new measures to reduce bottlenecks caused by traffic from the Cumbrae ferry.

Off-peak roadworks will begin on Monday 12th September lasting through until Friday 16th December.

Amey, which is in charge of maintenance on the trunk road, says the £190,000 scheme will see traffic lights installed at the junction of Fort Street and the slip way leading from the CalMac ferry, where traffic joining the A78 is currently controlled by a box junction.

Pavements upgraded

As the first stage in the project BT will be moving and reinstating their equipment.

The programme also includes improvements to the cracked concrete pavement surfaces in the area.

Amey has pledged no work will be undertaken during North Ayrshire school holidays 17th - 21st October, or other public holiday weekends and when local events are scheduled.

Installation of the junction traffic lights will be the last stage of the project, starting on

Monday 24th October and lasting through until mid-December.

Work will take place from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 4pm with traffic reduced to a single lane.
