A group of young farmers in Lanark have been left gutted after their hay bale art was set on fire over the weekend.

The design was centred around the characters in Winnie-the-Pooh and was supposed to represent different mental illnesses.

The display has been completely burned to the ground.

Club chairman Alastair Tennant, assistant secretary Jennifer Hewitt and junior member Eve Grierson are speaking to Clyde 1 about their disappointment.

Jennifer said: "The idea behind it all was to get farmers talking more about mental health.

"People in these communities tend to neglect themselves and we wanted to highlight the support and resources on offer to empower them.

"It feels like someone is making this out to be a joke and mental health is not something to be laughed at."

The display was in the middle of a field full of sheep and across the road from a care home when it was targeted by vandals in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It had been on show for less than a week when it was destroyed.

Alastair added: "Putting this display together was not cheap either.

"As a club we went out and bought all the paint and equipment needed for this artwork.

"It is not just a pile of straw sitting in a field because time, money and effort has been spent on it.

"For it to be targeted in this way is just really upsetting."
