Kilmarnock fan dies following Ayrshire derby at Rugby Park

The man suffered a heart attack as he made his way home following the match on Wednesday night

A Kilmarnock fan has passed away after having a heart attack following the Ayrshire Derby at Rugby Park.

The club has confirmed the man suffered a cardiac arrest as he made his way along Rugby Road after the match. He was treated by medics at the scene before being transferred to Crosshouse Hospital, where he passed away a short time later.

In a statement Kilmarnock FC have passed on “the condolences and thoughts of everyone at the club” to the man’s “family, friends and loved ones.”

Ayr United have also paid tribute, in a statement on social media the club expresses “immense sadness” at the incident.

A crowd of more than 7,500 were at Rugby Park for Wednesday night’s derby, which saw Ayr United run out 2-1 winners against their Ayrshire rivals.
