Junior football manager attack being treated as attempted murder
Paul McColl was found with what were believed to be gunshot wounds in Cadoc Street, Cambuslang, at around 8.50pm on Wednesday.
An attack in which a junior football manager is believed to have been shot is being treated as attempted murder. Paul McColl was found with what were believed to be gunshot wounds in Cadoc Street, Cambuslang, at around 8.50pm on Wednesday.
It is thought he was the victim of a 'targeted attack' a short time earlier and then made his way to the Kirkhill Bar in Cadoc Street where emergency services were called. The 48-year-old was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for treatment where medical staff describe his condition as stable.
Mr McColl has been manager of Cambuslang Rangers for the last three seasons. In a statement the club said: "The club is saddened to hear of the serious injuries sustained by our manager Paul McColl following an incident in Cambuslang. Our thoughts are with Paul and his family at this difficult time.''
Police are investigating whether a car found burnt out on Turnlaw Road, near East Greenlees Road, around 8.55pm was involved in the incident. Officers are appealing for information which could help their investigation.
Detective Sergeant Stephen Tennant said: "I would like to reassure the public that we believe this to be a targeted attack on the victim and extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the motive and full circumstances surrounding the incident. We cannot confirm the exact cause of the victim's injuries at this time, however we have several reports of loud bangs in the area and one line of enquiry is that a firearm was involved.
"This type of reckless violence has no place in our communities and the fact that it happened in a busy residential area will undoubtedly cause concern. Additional patrols will be in the area to provide reassurance and the officers will be happy to assist so feel free to approach them. Support from members of the public is going to be absolutely vital to this investigation and I cannot stress enough how important it is that anyone who may have information about what happened comes forward.''
He urged anyone who was in Borgie Crescent or Cadoc Street last night and saw or heard anything at all suspicious to contact police.
Officers would also like to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Turnlaw Road near to East Greenlees Road between 8.30pm and 9pm who may have noticed any cars parked or anyone making off from the scene, and any motorists with dashcams who were in the area around the time of the incident.
