Judges to decide on bin lorry prosecution bid
Families of people killed in two crashes in Glasgow want to put the drivers on trial
The families of three of the crash victims from the Glasgow bin lorry tragedy and the families of two students who were knocked down and killed in the city centre in 2010 are pursing a private prosecution today, against the two drivers. The hearing has come about after the Crown Office decided not to proceed with taking legal action.
Three of Scotland's top judges will decide whether a private prosecution will be brought against Harry Clarke who lost control of a bin lorry in Glasgow and and killed six people in the city centre in December 2014.
Three of the people who died were Jack and Lorraine Sweeney and their granddaughter Erin McQuade, and their family are pursing a private prosecution.
The judges have also been asked to consider an application to prosecute William Payne, lodged by the families of students Mhairi Convy and Laura Stewart, who were knocked down and killed on North Hanover Street in 2010.
