A judge told a 17-year-old who raped a 12-year-old girl twice he should respect women. At the High Court in Glasgow Lord Mulholland sentenced the teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to three years and two month detention and placed him on the sex offenders' register.

Lord Mulholland told him: “It is paramount that you address your offending behaviour to ensure this does not happen again.

“You raped a 12-year-old child. Your victim told you 'no' and you rejected her wishes and you didn't take no for an answer. You persisted and raped her. You raped the girl twice, the second occasion was four days after the first.

“You need to address this behaviour. You need to respect women and respect their wishes.”

The court heard that the teenager initially denied raping the young girl and told police: “I'm a virgin,” , but was caught by DNA evidence.

He admitted raping a 12-year-old girl twice at a house in Carluke, Lanarkshire. on March 4 and March 8, 2017.

Prosecutor Graeme Jessop said that the teenager and his victim met on social media and chatted for some time before meeting in person.

Mr Jessop said that on both occasions when the schoolgirl was being raped she told him to stop and the teenager said: “I'm not taking no for an answer.”

The matter was reported to the police after the girl revealed what had happened to a relative.

An internal swab was taken from the girl and the accused's DNA was found on it.

Mr Jessop said: “When he was questioned by police he denied having sex with the girl and told police he was a virgin.”

Solicitor advocate Shahid Latif, defending, said: “The accused has expressed remorse and regret for what he did.''
