A thug who admitted killing his lover's estranged husband - months after his murder conviction was quashed - has been jailed for six years and nine months. Ralph Goldie , 41, shoved Jeremy Paradine down stairs before jumping and stamping on him.

Jeremy, 45, had allowed Goldie and his ex Maryanne Paradine to stay at his flat in Cambuslang, near Glasgow, despite the fact they were dating.

Goldie went on to repay Jeremy's kindness by killing him in January 2017.

At the High Court in Glasgow judge Lord Matthews told Goldie: “You have pleaded guilty to killing your friend. You had both been drinking and you argued about him taking his ex-wife off the tenancy.

“You pushed him downstairs and jumped and stamped on him. What killed Mr Paradine was the fall. Nothing I can do can compensated for his death.”

Goldie was found guilty of murder and locked up for a minimum 14 years in December 2017.

But, his lawyers later launched an appeal against the conviction and Lord Justice Clerk Lady Dorrian ruled there had been a miscarriage of justice due to the jury's “self contradictory and inconsistent” verdict.

Goldie then pled guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide.

The court heard that Jeremy - also known as Jerry - was “upset” at his ex and Goldie seeing each other.

He took her name of their tenancy - but later allowed Maryanne and Goldie to move in with him when she became homeless.

Both Jeremy and Goldie were at a their friend Martin McQueenie's home in Cambuslang on the day of the killing.

They quarrelled and Goldie pushed Jeremy down the stairs. and then kicked and stamped on him as he lay prone.

As Martin went to try to help, Goldie told him: “Just f** leave him.”

Goldie then called l Maryanne and told her Jeremy is “lying at the bottom of the stairs,' and added: “Jerry's definitely not coming back in”.

He went on to admit he had pushed his victim because he had made her homeless.

The court heard Jeremy was found by police surrounded by items including a yellow Henry Hoover and a broken shoe rack.

Defence QC Gordon Jackson said: “This was a very unhappy menage a trois. They were all living together for some time. Mr Paradine threatened to make his ex-wife homeless.”

After the trial last year, Jeremy's mum Penelope told how he had been killed in “an act of senseless violence”.

She added: “I have lost my only son, my daughter her only brother.

“This is something we never contemplated as a parent never expects to outlive their child.''
