Two thugs face jail for Pollokshields wedding attack
Brothers Paviter and Armit Shergill got into an argument with Alan McCartney and his wife Nicole and John Carstairs and his partner Claire Monaghan, outside the Burgh Hall.
Two thugs are facing jail after they admitted battering and knocking out other guests at a wedding. Brothers Paviter, and Armit Shergill got into an argument with Alan McCartney and his wife Nicole, John Carstairs and his partner Claire Monaghan, outside Pollokshields Burgh Hall.
Armit, 34, clutched a glass bottle and reined blows on Mr McCartney after he fell to the ground during the altercation.
The attacks continued on Mr Carstairs and Mrs McCartney who were both knocked unconscious.
Amrit then returned to Mr McCartney on his hands and knees as he tried to steady himself and pushed him down towards the step where he hit his head and was knocked out.
Both Shergill men, from Greenhills, East Kilbride, pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court, to two assault charges each at the venue on Glencairn Drive on February 3, 2018.
Paviter, 38, admitted assaulting Mrs McCartney and Mr Carstairs to his severe injury, while Armit pled guilty to assaulting Mr McCartney and Mr Carstairs, both to their severe injury.
The court heard all around 12.10am Mr and Mrs McCartney were outside waiting on a taxi and spoke to both accused.
Mr Carstairs and his partner then also joined the group and waited on a taxi.
All six had been at a mutual friend’s wedding at the venue.
Procurator fiscal depute Alistair Shaw said: “At this time Paviter Shergill asked Mrs McCartney ‘what are you looking at?’ to which she replied ‘nothing’.
“He then turned to Mr McCartney and stated ‘Is that your wife?’ and he said ‘yes’.”
The court heard “an altercation arose” and Mr McCartney fell to the ground on the steps and Amrit stood over him clutching a bottle and repeatedly punched him to the head.
His wife and Mr Carstairs tried to stop the assault but Paviter Shergill “dragged” Mrs McCartney away.
Mr Shaw added: “Amrit then turned his attention to Mr Carstairs where he struck him to the back of the head with the glass bottle he was holding, causing it to smash.
“He then proceeded to repeatedly kick him on the body. At some point during this assault Mr Carstairs lost consciousness.”
Mrs McCartney tried again to push Paviter away but he grabbed her and swung her towards the ground which caused her to hit her head and be knocked out.
The prosecutor said: “He then turned his attention to Mr Carstairs on the ground and proceeded to repeatedly kick him along with Armit.”
The court heard “at some point” Amrit Shergill returned to Mr McCartney who was on his hands and knees “trying to steady himself”.
He ran toward him and pushed his head down toward the step which caused him to hit his head and be knocked unconscious.
Miss Monaghan screamed at the men throughout the attacks to stop assaulting Mr Carstairs and she phoned 999 when the men went back inside.
All three people attacked were still lying unconscious on the ground.
They were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Southern General hospital where they were treated for their injuries.
Later that morning police went to see them but had already left.
They tracked down Mr McCartney who had left before the result of his CT scan which showed he suffered a bleed to the brain, and was taken back to hospital.
He was assessed and admitted in to the high dependency unit for monitoring for the next two days. He also suffered a cut to his head which will scar and bruising to his left eye.
Mr Carstairs suffered a fractured pinkie, pain to his body and concussion while Mrs McCartney suffered grazing, bruising and swelling to her forehead.
Both Shergill men were charged on February 6 and charged with the offences.
Sheriff Andrew Cubie deferred sentence for reports and continued bail but told them “You should both understand a sentence of imprisonment is very a realistic option.''
