International student dies after being hit by car in Glasgow

An international student has died in hospital after being knocked down by a car in Glasgow.

The 24-year-old woman suffered a serious head injury after being hit by a car in University Avenue on Tuesday evening.

She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment but passed away on Thursday, police said.

The 24-year-was was studying at Glasgow International College, which teaches foreign students before they move on to degrees at the University of Glasgow.

A spokeswoman for the college said: “Our thoughts are with our student's family and friends and our focus now is on supporting them along with our students and staff.''

The woman was crossing the road near to its junction with Southpark Avenue when she was struck by a Ford Fiesta being driven by a 42-year-old man.

Police said he was uninjured but badly shaken.

The University of Glasgow is also offering counselling support to staff and students affected by the death.

A spokeswoman said: “We are deeply saddened that a student at our partner institution, Glasgow International College, has died as a result of a road traffic accident on Tuesday.

“We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends, and are doing all that we can to work with police on understanding the circumstances of the incident.

“We are also offering counselling support to staff and students affected by this tragic incident.''

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses of the crash to contact officers on 101
