International Glaswegians are being encouraged to share their stories in a new book, as part of the city’s 850th birthday.

The Glasgow850 project, run by the People Make Glasgow organisation, aims to create ‘Where did you GlasGOw?’, a commemorative book which celebrates the stories and treasured memories of at least 850 ex ‘weegies’ who now live abroad.

Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren explains, “It’s long been said that ‘story telling is the oldest form of education, and we hope by having global Glaswegians share their authentic stories and experiences that people will be able to gain a real understanding of our famous slogan, People Make Glasgow.”

“Glasgow has long been known for having some of the world’s best banter and that sense of humour doesn’t fade when they move away. They carry their memories and stories of home with them, sharing the unique spirit of Glasgow wherever they go.”

The creation of this book stands alongside a year long project aiming to create citywide events for the community, with Glasgow850 hoping the book will serve as a remembrance of Glasgow’s monumental birthday, as well as preserving the memorable moments and stories shared by former residents, to keep the rich history of the city alive.

Once completed, this collection of stories will be displayed in Glasgow’s City Chambers, with Glasgow850 aiming to have it completed and available to view by the end of the year.

Submissions for ‘Where did you GlasGOw?’ can be made through an online form, and those who wish to participate in this book can share as much or as little about their time in Glasgow as they like, and can write about themselves, or on behalf of an ancestor, friend, or relative.
