Illegal immigrants who raped woman in Glasgow flat jailed for over 8 years
Griselt Maranaku and Elton Baga attacked the 29-year-old in January 2019
Two men convicted of raping the same woman in Glasgow have been jailed for a total of more than eight years.
Griselt Maranaku and Elton Baga attacked their 29 year-old victim at a flat in Dennistoun in January 2019.
Ex-soldier Maranaku, 33, had sex with the woman before and after qualified nurse Baga, 32, was involved.
Jurors heard how she struggled with the Albanian-born duo, who were both in the country illegally, as her clothes were forcibly pulled off.
They were convicted of rape following a trial in March.
Maranaku was jailed for four years and seven months at the High Court in Glasgow while Baga was sentenced to four years.
Both still deny the sex attack.
Judge Sean Murphy QC said: “The woman was a stranger before the night of the incident.
"However, as a consequence, she has sustained psychological harm having become depressed, withdrawn and lacking in confidence."
He reduced Maranaku's jail-term from six years due to the time he had already spent behind bars.
Both were put on the sex offenders list indefinitely and will likely be ordered back to Albania on their release.
The trial heard how the victim and a friend had been in a bar when they met the pair.
The four all started chatting and later eventually went back to the flat.
At one point, then victim then went to bed where she was tailed by the attackers and raped.
It was her friend who alerted police before officers found the distressed woman in the street.
Maranaku claimed in evidence she had agreed to sex.
Bega insisted the woman wanted to take part in a threesome.
Maranaku's lawyer Frances Connor said he maintained his innocence and that there had been "no planning" of any sex crime.
Sarah Livingstone, defending Bega, told the court: "His position is that there has been a miscarriage of justice.”
