He got out of a dark coloured Corsa on Mill Road with a balaclava covering his face, before fleeing the scene around 9.10pm.
Emergency servbices attened and no one was injured.
The suspect is described as around 5ft 10, of medium build and was wearing a blue top with red lettering or motif on the chest, blue jeans and light coloured trainers
There were two other men within the Vauxhall Corsa at the time and officers are also carrying out enquiries to try and identify them.
Detective Constable Alan Hamilton, Cambuslang CID, said
“This was an incredibly dangerous act, which showed a complete disregard for the safety of any occupants of the house and neighbouring properties, however thankfully nobody was injured.
“We do believe this incident, which happened in daylight, was targeted.
“Mill Road is a busy route through the Fairhill area and there would have been lots of traffic in the area at that time, so we would ask anyone with dash-cam footage to get in touch with us. You may have information that can help.
“If you have any information regarding this incident we would urge you to contact us. Think back, did you see or hear anything, particularly anybody matching the description of the male or the vehicle acting suspiciously before or after the fire? It may have seemed insignificant at the time, but now may have some relevance.”
"We are treating this incident as wilful fire-raising and we will do everything we can to trace the person responsible."
