Police investigating the death of a man in Hamilton have made an arrest.

Police were called to a report of two injured men in the Burnbank Centre area of the town at around 3.50pm on Monday.

A 36-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 59-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Police said a 56-year-old man has been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

Superintendent Richard Taylor, of Motherwell police station, said: "We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.

"We have an increased police presence in the area as we understand this could be a very upsetting and worrying time for the local community.

"Anyone with concerns is asked to speak to these officers."

Police said there are some closures in place on Whitehill Road and Purdie Street which are likely to remain until after midday on Tuesday, with limited access to shops.

They advised members of the public to avoid the area.
