21 staff members self-isolating following fire at Hairmyres Hospital
It's following the fire which broke out in ward one on Friday.
21 members of staff at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbrie are self-isolating following a fire which broke out last week.
It's after employees from other wards had to help evacuate patients from the Covid-19 ward where the blaze broke out.
The staff members were contact traced following the incident and identified as at risk of contracting the virus.
Judith Park, acting director of acute services, NHS Lanarkshire, said: "Following a fire which broke out in ward one at University Hospital Hairmyres on Friday 30 October, several staff went above and beyond to put patient, and other staff, safety first.
"A multi-disciplinary team effort ensured that patients were safely evacuated.
"At this time, 21 staff have been identified as requiring to self-isolate following exposure to the risk of Covid-19. A test and protect exercise has been carried out.
"No further information is available on the cause of the fire which is currently under investigation.
"All patients remain stable."
The public has been reassured the number of staff members isolating will not impact on patient care.
Lise Axford, chief of nursing services, University Hospital Hairmyres, said: "We appreciate that this is a concerning time for all staff involved.
"We have a robust plan in place to support all areas that were affected by the recent fire to ensure that patient care is not compromised.
"Any staff shortfall will be covered by a combination of methods including rota changes and possible use of staff bank."
