Girlguiding leaders and senior section members from across Glasgow and the West will be acting as flagbearers for 6 of the sporting events being held in the city: diving, swimming, synchronised swimming, open water swimming, track cycling and golf.

The charity has 70 volunteers taking part in the games.

Trustee and International Adviser Alison Coyle said: "It is a really important role for our leaders and senior section members to have. They are incredibly excited to be part of making these memorable moments for the athletes.

"We're hoping it'll help them increase their confidence and team working skills with all the backstage activity they'll be taking part it, as well as just having a really unique experience.

"As the leading charity for girls in Scotland, encouraging them to try new things is what we're all about."

Denise Spence, Chief Executive of Girlguiding Scotland, said “As the leading charity for girls and young women in the country we’re delighted to be supporting the 2018 European Championships with more than 70 of our amazing volunteers signed-up to be flagbearers for a range of sports – from synchronized swimming to track cycling!

“Empowering girls to try new experiences and discover their potential is at the heart of what Girlguiding is all about and I hope the European Championships will inspire girls across Scotland to discover all the fun and fitness sport has to offer and even train to become the champion athletes of tomorrow.

“In Girlguiding Scotland we’re doing our part to make sure every girl has a space to try new sports; from our partnerships with SheRallies and Scottish Rugby, that help girls get to grips with tennis and rugby, to our new action-packed programme which includes a focus on health and wellbeing, helping inspire a lifelong-love of sport and fitness."
