Controversial plans to build hundreds of homes at the derelict Govan Graving Docks could create more than 1,000 new jobs, a report has found.

Independent analysis of plans to regenerate the derelict land by the city’s waterfront also found Glasgow's economy would grow as a result - but local campaigners say the shipyard should instead be turned into a maritime museum and community asset.

Developers New City Vision want to build 720 residential units – 150 of which will be affordable homes – as well as 2,500 square metres of commercial retail space and 2,500 square metres of restaurant and leisure space.

The Economic Impact Appraisal was carried out by economic and social research consultants EKOS, who predict the development would turn the area into “a vibrant new community”.

But community campaign group Clyde Docks Preservation Initiative (CDPI) say previous plans by New City Vision have failed to live up to the promised standards.

The site itself sits on the River Clyde next to the BBC headquarters and the Science Centre.

Harry O’Donnell, chairman of New City Vision, said: “This site has been derelict for 30 years. It is an eyesore. Our plans will remove this blot on the city’s landscape and reinvigorate the area by creating long-term jobs and much-needed affordable housing.”

The detailed research carried out by EKOS highlights how New City Vision’s proposals will generate additional value for Glasgow’s economy through building 720 homes, generating more than 1000 new jobs during the construction period and leaving a legacy of 300 permanent jobs when completed.

The analysis also shows the City Council benefitting by almost ÂŁ1million annually at current charges through council tax and non-domestic rates.

In its key findings, EKOS says: “The development will transform the derelict former Graving Docks site into a vibrant new community of around 1500 people with a range of local retail and leisure facilities.

“The completed development and the increase in the resident base will provide a boost to existing local services and businesses in the wider Govan area, provide employment opportunities particularly for young people and contribute to the ongoing regeneration of the riverside area of Govan."
