Vodaphone have announced that Glasgow is set to become one of seven cities across the UK to recieve a 5G connection.

Glasgow will be the only Scottish city to benefit from their new signal , which is due to come into effect on July 3.

Vodafone UK's consumer director Max Taylor says the 5G connection will be significantly faster than its 4G predecessor.

"5G provides both businesses and consumers with three main benefits. These are improved data speeds, greater reliability in busy areas and super low latency.

"Taking each benefit in turn, by offering speeds over 5G up to ten times faster than 4G, we've shown commuters at busy airports and railway stations that they can download TV box sets or movies in a matter of seconds before they embark on their journey.

"5G will also ensure faster data speeds for customers in congested areas, such as busy shopping centres, sporting events or music concerts."

The company have also announced that customers will be able to access 5G overseas over summer , in Spain, Italy and Germany.

Following the current stand-off between Huawei and the US Government the company confirmed that new Huawei phones will not be supported on the 5G network.

Taylor says this should only affect UK customers pre-ordering a specific phone and should only be for a brief period.

"With regards to Huawei handsets, we are only pausing pre-orders for the Huawei Mate 20X 5G in the UK.

"This is a temporary measure while uncertainty exists regarding new Huawei 5G devices. We will keep this situation under review.''

The omission of Huawei comes after Google conformed to a US government order which forces American companies to stop trading with the Chinese firm.

The block means Google will stop supplying its Android operating system to Huawei's new devices, although it will continue to support phones already on sale.
